Final project

HEAD-SPACE CUBE

Form manipulation is the act of exercising and applying the understanding of design elements and design principles when designing a space. The final project is an application of skills and knowledge acquired from Project 1 and Project 2 in designing a Head-space cube for the client from the assigned character in the movie ‘Inside Out’.

Modern Architecture

REQUIREMENTS

PART 1 – HEAD-SPACE CUBE MODEL

1. To produce a head-space cube using only REGULAR OR IRREGULAR GEOMETRIC shapes and forms to explore the spatial design, spatial qualities, and atmosphere.
2. To apply DESIGN ELEMENTS, COLOUR THEORY, DESIGN PRINCIPLES, and COMPOSITION articulately to make the head-space cube as interesting as possible.
3. The final model should be designed within the given perimeter of 30cm³.

PART 2 - PRESENTATION

1. To produce one A1 size of DIGITAL PRESENTATION BOARD using CANVA or PHOTOSHOP :
• Conceptual design idea(s) & bubble diagrams
• Design development process
• Mock-up models
• Sketches & diagrams
• Final drawings & Final Model Images

2. Prepare 5 to 7 minutes video final verbal presentation

ANALYSIS OF CLIENT : FEAR

Fear is the major character from the film Inside Out. He appears to be unsure of himself, an emotion that matches his name.

Fear’s main job is to protect Riley and keep her safe. He is constantly on the lookout for potential disasters, and spends time evaluating the possible dangers, pitfalls and risk involved in Riley’s everyday activities.

Enemy : Gloom and Jangles the Clown

Dislike : Spiders, scary movies, bears, broccoli, Boy Band Island

Power : Float

Fate : Lives happily with his friends when Riley adapts to her new lifestyle

Appearance : Scrawny, purple, bug-eyed, question mark posture, based on raw nerve

Why Purple?

• Fear was kind of frankly, and purple is the leftover colour.

• People who like purple means you are sensitive and compassionate, understanding and supportive, thinking of others before yourself.

• Purple represents gentle and free spirit. They are usually introverted rather than extroverted and may give the impression of being shy although this is not the case.

Height Analysis

If Joy stands at the height of a 6 years old girl, which is approximately120cm, Fear's height will be around 110cm as he is slightly shorter than Joy.

Wheel of Emotion

Wheel of emotion is a circular graphic divided into sections and subsections to help the user better identify and understand their emotional experience at any given time, under any circumstance. Through years of studying emotions, American psychologist Dr. Robert Plutchik proposed that there are eight primary emotions that serve as the foundation for all others: joy, sadness, acceptance, disgust, fear, anger, surprise and anticipation. (Pollack, 2016)

Bubble Diagram

Bubble diagram is a system to show relationships between functional areas of a program to develop an architectural plan. There will be 6 spaces created for Fear, which are interaction space, playroom (happy space), safe space, workspace (focus room), meditation area and hiding space. Every spaces are interconnected with the hiding space in the middle, acts as the intersection point.

Design Strategy

• Inspiration : Spiral and cake slices

• Introduce circular shapes

• Experience of spaces : Calm, relaxing, bright, spacious

• Design principles : Rhythm, movement, harmony, emphasis

Viola Coraggioso

- The Cozy Place for FEAR -

Viola Coraggioso, means "The Brave Purple", is a head cube space designed for the character Fear from the film Inside Out. The spaces designed are interaction space, workspace, meditation area, safe space, playroom and hiding space. Each space provides different functions and experiences.

The design principles applied are rhythm, movement, harmony, and emphasis. The hollow triangles at the playroom show the random rhythm. Progression rhythm can be seen at the rising platform at the interaction space. Movement is shown from the top view, the arrangement of the D shape structures have formed an invisible direction. The S shape platform at meditation space also guides the viewers' eyes from low to high. The meditation space is the largest and most spacious area which is the emphasis of the model. White and light purple are applied on this model, which fits the theme of harmony

All spaces are linked to one another, with the hiding space as the intersection point. Overall it gives the feeling of peace, calm, spacious and bright.

REFLECTION

I like this project because it gives us a lot of freedom to unleash our creativity to make a space for the character, Fear from Inside Out.

To avoid making the same mistake as the previous model, I never procrastinate to make sure that I have ample time to finish this task. When presenting in the class, I was rejoice because I was praised by Ms Hanim as the most productive student! Thank you Ms Hanim <3 I gained confidence and promised to continue the spirit until the end of the project.

For this project, I decided to take the challenges to add circular shapes into my model and produce a complete rendered drawing using the knowledge I learnt in Fundamental Drawing. I realised that cutting the curve edges requires a lot of patience, and most importantly, a sharp knife. I changed a few cutting knives throughout the process to ensure that I can get a nice cut. After I finished the presentation board, I used Zoom recording to record my presentation and edited in Adobe Premiere Pro. I am proud to see my final outcome.

Here it comes to the end of this module. I am thankful to have two kind and caring lecturers, Mr. Paul and Ms. Hanim as my lecturers for this module, who have helped and supported me along the journey. I appreciate how hard you worked for us especially during this hard time. We know that teaching online is not an easy task, but we really have a great time learning from both lecturers. Once again, thank you Mr. Paul and Ms. Hanim! : )
