Designer’s Journey:
Elements of Design
Look around! Whether it is Natural or man-made, our surrounding subject matters have inherent “formal elements” waiting for creative artists and designers to appreciate and discover. Formal elements are general and abstract in nature- in that they do not describe specific things but reveals to you a rich underlying elementary line, shape, colours and texture from within matters. As succinctly described by Poppy Evans and Mark A. Thomas (2013) in their book of Exploring the Elements of Design beautifully put it in words: “A line can represent a leaf, the human figure has shape, and a bowl of fruit has colour”.
